The news that began circulating on Thursday (January 25) afternoon is finally official: Walt Disney Studios announced on Friday evening that J.J. Abrams will direct "Star Wars: Episode VII."
As was previously announced, Oscar winner Michael Arndt is scripting the film, which will be produced for Disney by Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy. Writers Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are officially described as "consulting" on the project.
The formal confirmation of what everybody in the media reported the day before at least came with enthusiastic statements in praise of Abrams from a couple important people.

"To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honor," J.J. Abrams states. "I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid."

Did the "SNL" writers leave the Golden Globes winner and Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence hanging in the wind last night during her monologue? It was no Oscar-worthy performance. Stand-up takes another skill set and J. Law came across as a little stilted and high-school speechy, but also genuine and game.
The heart of Lawrence's monologue was her take-down of her four fellow Best Actress Oscar nominees, one-by-one. Of her chief rival Jessica Chastain, Lawrence said, "Jessica Chastain -- more like Jessica Chast-aint winning no Oscar on my watch. In 'Zero Dark Thirty' you caught Bin Laden. So what? In 'Winter's Bone' I caught a squirrel -- and then I ate it. Boom. Deal with that!" She went on to trash talk Naomi "What's her problem" Watts, Emmanuelle Riva and Quvenzhane Wallis.
It was tricky territory for an Oscar contender and the jokes needed to be sharper. There were occasional chuckles but no LOL moments. The 'SNL' writers really let Lawrence down with the soft-target jibes at notoriously grouchy Tommy Lee Jones. Placing Bill Hader in the studio audience to repeat, and repeat, the "Lincoln" star's awards-night sour puss was a throwaway. And that joke about eating baby corn like corn-on-the-cob: really? That was old in Lincoln's day.
One can only hope that most Academy members were already tucked into their Tempurpedics before the show aired.
The takeaway over at The Hollywood Reporter was that while Lawrence was "serving" her rivals, the writers served her up to scrutiny. Blame it on the paid comic professionals agreed a commenter named Sarah, "Jennifer is hilarious...she's hilarious in real life and hilarious in silver linings...the writing was just HORRIBLE. she had nothing to work with." Len Feldman agreed: "In a year where SNL's writing has been as bad as I can remember (and I remember all the way back to Season 1,) this was perhaps the worst-written episode of the season. Jennifer Lawrence did the best she could with truly awful material."

Victoria Azarenka overcame some anxiety, a sore left knee and a slew of frustrating forehand errors before fending off American teenager Sloane Stephens to reach the Australian Open final against Li Na.
For the second time in two days, the 19-year-old Stephens sat patiently in a courtside chair late in the second set while an experienced, older player took a medical timeout.
On Thursday, the top-seeded Azarenka asked for a medical timeout after wasting five match points with a sequence of forehand errors, but returned to quickly finish off a 6-1, 6-4 win on her sixth match point. The outcome was different Wednesday, when Stephens rallied from a set and a break down to beat an injured Serena Williams in three sets.
After dropping serve in the ninth game of the second set, Azarenka went to the locker room for treatment -- the tournament confirmed later it was for left knee and rib injuries -- and then returned to break the 29th-seeded Stephens' serve to finish off the match.
"Well, I almost did the choke of the year right now at 5-3, having so many chances, I couldn't close it out," Azarenka said in an on-court TV interview. "I just felt a little bit overwhelmed. I realized I'm one step away from the final, and nerves got into me for sure."
The crowd had tried to get Stephens back into the match in the second set. Fans yelled encouragement after almost every point, and a few in the crowd heckled Azarenka by mocking the noise she makes when she hits the ball.
Azarenka started to lose her composure when she hit a forehand way beyond the baseline on her third match point, her hooting sound elevating to a louder, high-pitched shriek.
After Stephens saved the match points, the crowd gave her a huge round of applause and a few people jumped out of their seats. Azarenka got tepid applause after clinching the match.
The 23-year-old Azarenka later said she'd had difficulty breathing.
"I couldn't breathe. I had chest pains," she said. "It was like I was getting a heart attack.
"After that it wasn't my best, but it's important to overcome this little bit of a struggle and win the match."
Stephens said the timing of the medical break didn't affect the match.

"It struck me beforehand that she could wear Democratic blue," said Simon Collins, fashion dean at Parsons The New School for Design in New York, whose alumni include Jason Wu, who designed Obama's inauguration ball gown four years ago. "Previously she might have wanted to be neutral, but now the way President Obama is asserting his Democratic values more than before, I thought perhaps blue would be a color she would wear."
The jacquard fabric of her inauguration morning dress and coat were based on a men's silk necktie, according to a White House aide. Browne is best known for the shrunken suit trend he started in menswear a few years ago. He was named the Council of Fashion Designers of America Menswear Designer of the Year in 2006.
With the Thom Browne ensemble, Obama wore a cardigan by Reed Krakoff.
Daughter Malia Obama, 14, picked out her magenta ensemble from J.Crew. Sasha, 11, wore a purple Kate Spade coat and dress.
Any fears that the fashion world's focus had jumped the pond to the Duchess of Cambridge were allayed on Inauguration Day.
"The novelty has worn off — we're used to the fact the first lady is cool and very stylish, but it doesn't make her any less so," Collins said. "As interest in her fashion has waned in the reactionary media, reaction from the fashion industry has grown because there is a visible effect on business. She certainly can have an effect, it's not necessarily a guarantee of success. It's a common misconception that one outfit can build a business."
Chicago-based designer Maria Pinto, who Obama wore often during the first presidential campaign, shut down her business in Chicago in 2010, citing the economic downturn and retailers' shrinking inventories.
Jason Wu, meanwhile, has expanded his business since Obama wore his gown.
"My signature collection has had a lot of success," Wu said during a recent visit to Chicago. He just launched a contemporary collection, called Miss Wu, exclusively at Nordstrom stores and nordstrom.com. Miss Wu pieces range from $190 to $850, which is where his signature collection picks up. Although Miss Wu is for a younger customer, it retains the figure-flattering tailoring of the signature pieces that Obama has worn.
"With anything I do, I'm really in the business of dressing women," Wu said. "I don't want to create things that people can't wear."
Obama has championed that ideal in fashion, overthrowing the tyranny of the size 2 in a way that Catherine Duchess of Middleton does not with her super-slim frame.
"Michelle Obama represents, ironically, sort of ordinary women," said Hazel Clark, a professor in Parsons fashion studies program.
Parsons has trained other designers Obama has worn, including Prabal Gurung, Peter Som, Alexander Wang, Derek Lam and Narciso Rodriguez, whose red and black dress captured the spotlight when Obama wore it the night her husband was first elected president.
"It's not so much that she influences certain items of clothing — maybe her preference for cardigans has been influential — but it's more that she is someone who dresses confidently and looks good without being seen as trivial," Clark said. "Often as we know, associations with fashion, particularly for women, have a trivializing effect. She has cared for her appearance without being seen as a coathanger, which is lovely."
Thom Browne also has designed the Black Fleece men's and women's collection for Brooks Brothers in addition to his signature line. He received the 2012 National Design Award in Fashion Design, celebrated with a White House luncheon that the first lady hosted. She wore a lace dress by Browne for the Democratic National Convention in September 2012, according to the mrs-o.com blog.
The first lady, who was sporting freshly cropped bangs and eyelash extensions, plans to give the Inauguration Day ensemble to the National Archives, the aide said.
