colin kaepernick | Kings of the NFC—And Maybe the NFL 3

It was absorbing, excruciating, head-spinning and draining. In an epic NFL postseason, Sunday's NFC championship game was another nail-biter that kept us guessing until the final few seconds. But in the end, we got the Super Bowl matchup that almost everyone wanted: The San Francisco 49ers are headed to New Orleans for a starry showdown with the Baltimore Ravens.

It's a game that will be headlined by Ray Lewis, the Harbaugh brothers and Colin Kaepernick, the 49ers' impossibly cool quarterback, who led his team back from an early hole to a 28-24 victory and its first Super Bowl berth in 18 years.

Deep down, it is probably best that it worked out like this. The Falcons were no one's idea of a sexy Super Bowl pick. Despite their 13-3 record, the best in the NFC, and the fact they had home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, the Falcons never captured the imagination like the other three teams playing Sunday.

San Francisco, on the other hand, is NFL royalty. This team has five Super Bowl titles and one of the brightest, brashest young rosters in the league. By the fourth quarter, when the 49ers roared back from a 17-0 deficit to take its first lead of the game on Frank Gore's 9-yard run, it felt like the right team would be heading to the Superdome. "In the second half, we showed what 49er football is all about," 49ers tight end Delanie Walker said.

In many ways, Sunday's game was a tribute to San Francisco's strengths. In the second half, the 49ers offense looked all but unstoppable. The defense, which had been eviscerated by Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan and wide receiver Julio Jones in the first half, toughened up after halftime. And the way the road team recovered from a 17-point hole—the biggest comeback in NFC championship history—bodes well should they fall behind early in two weeks. In fact, if it weren't for a fumble by Michael Crabtree inches from the goal line, San Francisco's margin of victory could even have been greater.
